Environmental focus

Growing more with fewer inputs

Thomas Fresh works with innovative research partners developing specialized micronutrients and plant hormones. This work helps participating growers reduce raw nitrogen and water use while maintaining the quality retailers expect.

We also aim to reduce general chemical use on our growers’ fields each year, supporting the long-term well-being of growers, customers and the land.

Through the Thomas Fresh grower and research program, participating growers have reported reductions of up to 50% in raw nitrogen use while using nearly half the water used by a conventional russet grower.

Ongoing research

Better varieties begin in the field

Our potato breeding and research programs help bring consistent, high-performing varieties to retail shelves. We create approximately 80,000 new potato varieties each year, select the strongest candidates and trial them across our growing regions and in more than a dozen countries.

Developing dependable commercial supply generally takes about 15 years. That patience delivered the first commercially successful Canadian-bred creamer variety in 2002, and our successful varieties remain exclusive to Thomas Fresh.
