Persimmons: The Halloween Treat
This Halloween season – save a pumpkin and carve a persimmon instead! If you haven’t tried this scrumptious super fruit, we highly recommend that you do. Below are a few interesting facts on fuyu persimmons that are anything but spooky.
A Sweet Treat
Persimmons are a delicious fruit, often compared to a pear or an apple. They have a crisp yet tender texture and a richly sweet flavour – they really are as sweet as candy! Fuyu persimmons are also the most widely available persimmon in the world. These mini pumpkin-like fruits are a popular choice for many!
“Fruit of the Gods” – Not the Ghosts
With origins over a millennium ago in Asia, persimmons remain underrated to most in the western world. However, don’t let their obscurity fool you, in ancient Greece persimmons were known as “the fruit of the gods” – not the ghosts.
Scarily Good for You
Not only is the taste heavenly, but the health benefits associated with fuyu persimmons won’t scare you away. They are high in vitamin C, antioxidants, fibre and just one fruit provides 55% of your daily dose of vitamin A. These super fruits are even rumoured to promote weight loss and combat cancer!
The season to find fuyu persimmons is here – they are usually available in the months of September to December. But how do you eat them? You can start with simply enjoying them raw by peeling and cutting the fruit (making them an excellent on-the-go snack!) You can also throw them on a salad or bake with them in cookies, cakes, muffins, and tarts. Be bold this Halloween and give kids a healthy persimmon instead of candy when they are trick-or-treating!
